A little history of the Besançon Citadel...

The history of the Besançon Citadel is closely linked to that of its architect: Vauban (1633 - 1707). Vauban, who drew up the plans for the building in 1668, left a deep imprint on the whole of the town, which was then under Spanish control. The Treaty of Nijmegen, signed on 10 August 1678, united the city and its region with the kingdom of France.

Symbol of the city of Besançon

At the heart of the city, no fewer than 18 other Vauban heritage sites dot the fortifications, reinforcing the surprising heritage identity of the Comtois capital. The chapel houses a 15-minute multimedia projection on the history of the citadel and Besançon. The site is also home to 3 museums: the Resistance and Deportation Museum, the Comtois Museum and the Museum.

The leading tourist and cultural site in central-eastern France

The Besançon Citadel is considered to be one of the most beautiful citadels in France. This exceptional military architectural ensemble has been listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since July 2008. With almost 270,000 visitors a year and a wide range of attractions (heritage, history, museums, biodiversity, animals, shows, etc.), the Besançon Citadel is now the leading tourist and cultural site in Central and Eastern France. Overlooking the old town of the Comtois capital by more than 100 metres, it offers visitors an unbeatable view of the city of Besançon.
